In 2021, Tesla stopped putting chrome on its cars. Not less chrome. None.
The refreshed Model 3 lost the bright trim around every window, the chrome on the door handles, and the shiny surrounds on the little triangular camera housings behind the front wheels. All of it went black. The only chrome Tesla left on the car was the logos. The refreshed Model S and Model X followed the same year, and the Model Y had never had chrome to begin with — so by the end of 2021, the entire Tesla lineup was chrome-free.
Here's the part that should stop you.
Before Tesla did this, the single most popular aftermarket modification on the Model 3 was chrome delete — owners paying shops a few hundred dollars to cover that exact trim with black film. Tesla watched thousands of people pay to undo a decision the factory had made, and then stopped making the decision.
The factory shipped the mod.
That's not a small thing, and it's not really a Tesla story. It's the clearest possible signal about where the entire industry has been heading for a decade — and it has a direct consequence for anyone whose car still has bright trim on it. Let's take the two halves in order: why it happened, then what to do about it.
Tesla Never Published a Manifesto. The Change Explains Itself.
To be straight with you: Tesla never issued a statement explaining the reasoning, so anyone who tells you they know the official motive is guessing. But four forces were all pushing the same direction, and you can read them off the car itself.
1. Chrome is a highlight. Black is a shadow.
This is the design argument, and once you see it you can't unsee it. A chrome window surround is a bright reflective line that your eye follows before it follows anything else. It flares in sunlight, it blows out in photographs, and it draws a hard border around the glass — which visually chops the car into a "greenhouse" sitting on top of a separate "body."
Black trim does the opposite. It recedes. Glass, pillars, and surrounds merge into a single dark mass, the roofline reads as one unbroken shape, and your eye finally follows the body lines the designer actually drew. The car looks lower, wider, and newer. On a slab-sided, minimal-surface design like a Model 3, chrome was actively fighting the shape.
2. The aftermarket had already voted.
Manufacturers watch what owners immediately change. When a specific modification becomes the most common thing done to your car in its first three years, that is unambiguous product feedback that arrived without a survey.
3. Lineup coherence.
The Model Y launched with black trim. Once one car in the lineup establishes the design language and customers respond to it, the older siblings look dated sitting next to it in the same showroom.
4. Chrome is becoming a manufacturing liability.
This is the one almost nobody talks about, and it's worth understanding because it means the trend is not reversible.
Traditional decorative chrome plating uses hexavalent chromium — Cr(VI) — which is a confirmed human carcinogen and one of the more heavily regulated substances in industrial finishing. In the EU it moved onto the REACH authorization list, with the trajectory pointing toward restriction. In the US, the EPA regulates chrome electroplating emissions under the Clean Air Act, and the California Air Resources Board has pursued an outright ban on hexavalent chrome in decorative plating specifically. Suppliers are shifting to trivalent chrome or abandoning plated trim entirely.
To be precise: no source says Tesla removed chrome for this reason, and we're not claiming it did. But it explains why every manufacturer is drifting the same way at the same time. Bright trim is a cost, a compliance burden, and a supply-chain risk that black plastic and film simply are not.
Style changes back. Regulation doesn't. Chrome is not coming back.
Tesla Was Late, Not Early
Here's the thing that reframes the whole conversation: while Tesla was deleting chrome for free, the premium brands had already been *charging* for the same look for years.
BMW — Extended Shadowline. Replaces chrome with high-gloss black on the window surrounds, the B- and C-pillar finishers, the mirror bases and triangles, and grille elements. Typically bundled with M Sport. Roughly two-thirds of new M Sport cars are ordered with it.
Mercedes-Benz — AMG Night Package. Gloss black window trim, mirror housings, and exterior accents. Commonly $500–$2,000 depending on model, and considerably more on some.
Audi — Black Optic / Black Optic Plus. Black grille frame, window surrounds, and mirror caps. Typically $1,500–$2,500, and on some configurations it drags other option fees along with it.
Porsche — SportDesign in high-gloss black. Depending on model, roughly $3,000–$4,200 for what is, functionally, black trim.
Land Rover — Stealth Pack. On the 2025 Range Rover Sport, the US price ran north of $10,000.
Mainstream brands — bundled into a trim. Toyota's Nightshade, Chevrolet's Midnight and Redline editions, Nissan's Midnight Edition, Jeep's Altitude, Lexus's F Sport Blackline. You usually can't buy the black trim by itself — you buy an entire trim level to get it, which is why the real cost of Nightshade is measured in thousands.
So the consensus is total. At the top of the market you pay four figures for black trim. At Tesla you get it standard. Nobody, anywhere, is adding chrome back.
So Here's the Issue
If your car still wears bright trim, you are driving a design decision that the company who made it has since reversed, that its competitors charge thousands to avoid, and that the supply chain is walking away from.
And you cannot buy your way out of it at the dealership. Three reasons:
It was an order-time decision. Factory blackout is specified when the car is built. Miss the box, buy used, or simply change your taste two years in, and the door is shut. Dealers will not retrofit it, because for most of these packages there is nothing to retrofit — the black pieces are different physical components, not a coating that can be applied later.
It's permanent. Factory black trim is black trim. Decide later that you want chrome back for resale, or satin instead of gloss, and you're placing a parts order.
It's bundled. You rarely buy blackout alone. You buy it attached to a package, attached to a trim, attached to a step-up you didn't want.
And even then it's incomplete. The factory packages routinely leave something shiny behind — an exhaust tip, a badge surround, a lower grille bar, a set of roof rails.
This is the actual problem, and it's the one a chrome delete solves. Not "make my car look cool." Get the finish the industry already settled on, on a car that was built before the decision, without buying a new car to do it.

What Actually Gets Deleted
"Chrome delete" sounds like one thing. In practice it's a parts list, and the price is a function of how long that list is on your specific car:
A pre-refresh Tesla is a short, well-known list. A 2016 Mercedes E-Class with the chrome package is a very long one. That range — not vehicle size — is what actually drives price.
How a Chrome Delete Is Actually Performed
This is the part almost nobody writes about honestly, because it's where the difference between a $200 job and a $600 job lives. Both look identical the day you pick the car up. They stop looking identical around month four.
Step 1 — Assessment and the trim-off decision. Before anything is cleaned, we go over every chrome piece and decide, piece by piece, whether it gets wrapped in place or removed from the car first. Taking off mirror caps, handles, and certain moldings costs real time, but it's what allows the film to be folded around the back of the part instead of cut flush at the visible edge. That single decision is most of the difference between "factory" and "wrapped."
Step 2 — Decontamination. Chrome is smoother and lower-energy than paint, and it holds a film of road grime, wax, and silicone from years of car washes that you cannot see. Wash, then chemical decontamination, then a solvent wipe on every surface that will receive film. Adhesive failures are almost never adhesive failures. They're contamination failures.
Step 3 — Cutting. Two legitimate methods. Pre-cut computer templates, where the pattern for your specific year and model is plotted before it ever touches the car. Or bulk film cut on the vehicle using knifeless tape — a filament laid under the film and pulled through to slice it from beneath. What never happens is a blade drawn along your paint. If a shop is freehanding a razor against your door skin, the chrome delete is not your biggest problem.
Step 4 — Application. Trim pieces are almost always applied dry, not wet, because a wet application on a small tight-tolerance piece traps moisture with nowhere to escape. The film is tacked, then heated and worked down with a squeegee, following the curve of the piece rather than fighting it.
Step 5 — Edges. This is the whole job. Anywhere possible, film gets wrapped around and terminated behind the part or tucked under a rubber seal, so there is no visible cut line at all. Where an edge must be exposed, it's trimmed with a deliberate margin — not stretched flush to the boundary, which is the classic cause of the thin silver hairline that shows up as the film relaxes.
Step 6 — Compound curves and the over-stretch trap. Door handles and mirror caps aren't flat. They're compound surfaces, and the wrong answer is to yank the film until it lies down. Over-stretched film goes thin, loses opacity, and — more importantly — stores tension. Stored tension is a countdown. The right answer is heat, relief where the geometry demands it, and patient work from the center outward.
Step 7 — This is why cheap deletes fail: film choice. There are two families of vinyl. Cast film is manufactured in a liquid state, has almost no built-in memory, and stays where you put it. Calendered film is rolled under pressure, costs a fraction as much, and never stops trying to return to the flat rectangle it was born as. On a flat sign, nobody can tell. On a curved door handle in South Florida heat, calendered film shrinks back from the edges — usually somewhere between month three and month eight. Every "my chrome delete is peeling" story is this story. We use premium cast film for exactly this reason.
Step 8 — Adhesion promoter on the terminations. Recessed channels and deep edges get a manufacturer-specified primer so the termination point holds through heat cycling and pressure washing. A small step that quietly determines whether the job lasts.
Step 9 — Post-heating. The step that separates five years from five months. Every area that was stretched or conformed gets heated to the film manufacturer's specified temperature and confirmed with an infrared thermometer. Doing this resets the film's memory — it permanently forgets the shape it used to be and accepts the shape it's in now. Skip it and the film remembers. It always remembers.
Step 10 — Inspection and cure. Every edge checked under raking light, then the vehicle sits so the adhesive can build its bond. We'll ask you to keep it out of the pressure washer for the first week.

How to Spot a Bad Chrome Delete in Ten Seconds
Useful whether you're vetting a shop, buying a used car, or checking work you already paid for. Get close and look for:
Good work has none of these, and honestly doesn't look wrapped at all. It looks like you ordered the car that way.
What a Chrome Delete Can't Fix
We'd rather tell you this before you're standing in the shop.
Pitted or oxidized trim telegraphs. A lot of "chrome" window trim isn't chrome — it's bright anodized aluminum, and in South Florida's salt air it corrodes into a fine chalky pitting. Film conforms to what's under it, so texture shows through. Sometimes we can level it during prep. Sometimes the honest answer is that the trim needs polishing or replacement first, and we'll say so rather than take your money and hand you a bumpy black stripe.
Previously failed wraps need extra prep. Old adhesive residue has to come off completely, and that's billable time.
Some cars genuinely look better with chrome. Classics, certain full-size luxury sedans, and anything where the chrome is part of the original design intent rather than a trim-level decoration. We've talked customers out of chrome deletes. It's a short conversation and it saves everyone money.
Film is not paint and doesn't pretend to be. It's a durable, reversible, high-quality covering with a real service life — 5–7 years down here with sane care. It isn't permanent, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.
Wrap vs. Paint vs. Dip
Three ways to get black trim. They are not equivalent.
Vinyl film — reversible, factory-consistent finish, protects the trim underneath, one day of shop time. It's what the aftermarket standardized on for a reason.
Painting the trim — permanent, more expensive, and it removes an option from the next owner. Trim plastics and anodized aluminum are also unforgiving substrates; done without proper adhesion prep, painted trim chips at exactly the spots people touch.
Dipping — cheap, thick, and soft. It scratches, it collects dirt at the edges, and in this climate it does not hold up. We see the aftermath more often than the application.

What It Costs

Which Finish Actually Matches Factory
Gloss black is what BMW's Shadowline, the AMG Night Package, and Audi's Black Optic almost all use, and it's what Tesla used on the refresh. If your goal is "looks like I ordered it this way," gloss is the answer more often than people expect.
Satin black is more restrained, hides dust and water spotting far better in daily use, and pairs beautifully with matte or satin paint. It's the enthusiast's pick. Worth noting that in the same 2021 refresh, Tesla moved the interior center console away from gloss black to a duller finish — because gloss shows every fingerprint on a surface people actually touch. The same logic applies to exterior pieces you grab, like door handles.
Matte black is the most aggressive and the least factory-looking — which is exactly why some people want it.
Body-color or accent deletes are the outlier move: trim matched to your paint, or run in a contrast color as a deliberate design choice rather than a blackout.
